Blakeslee Lab: Lab News and Exciting Items!

Congratulations to Tim Lee on receiving two grad scholarships: Crustacean Society and North Carolina Wildlife Federation!

9/30/2020

Tim had great success this year in securing two grad scholarships for his PhD research in the Blakeslee lab. The first was for the Crustacean Society for his work on barcoding amphipods and understanding amphipod diversity associated with the invasive alga Agarophyton vermiculophylla. The second was from the North Carolina Wildlife Federation for his work along North Carolina coasts understanding the effect of the invasive alga on coastal communities. Here is a blurb from Tim about those efforts:

"I am comparing and contrasting macroinvertebrate diversity between a non-native and native foundational species on the estuarine coasts of North Carolina. Currently these estuaries are slowly transforming as a non-native seaweed is expanding and potentially interfering with native seagrasses. With the support from NCWF scholarship, I hope to determine if the native or non-native foundational species can accommodate higher richness and diversity of macroinvertebrates."
